Düngerproduktion, also known as fertilizer production, refers to the industrial processes involved in manufacturing fertilizers. Fertilizers are substances that provide essential nutrients to plants, thereby improving their growth and yield. The primary nutrients supplied by fertilizers are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), often referred to as NPK.

The production of nitrogen fertilizers largely relies on the Haber-Bosch process, which synthesizes ammonia (NH3) from atmospheric nitrogen and hydrogen. Ammonia is then further processed into various nitrogen-based fertilizers such as urea, ammonium nitrate, and ammonium sulfate. Urea is one of the most widely used nitrogen fertilizers due to its high nitrogen content and relatively low cost.

Phosphorus fertilizers are typically derived from phosphate rock, which is mined and then treated with acids. The most common method involves reacting phosphate rock with sulfuric acid to produce phosphoric acid, which is then converted into superphosphate or triple superphosphate. Rock phosphate itself can also be used directly as a slow-release phosphorus fertilizer, especially in acidic soils.

Potassium fertilizers are mainly produced from potash salts, which are mined from underground deposits. These salts, such as potassium chloride (potash), are then processed and purified to create various potassium-based fertilizers. These fertilizers are crucial for plant health, disease resistance, and water regulation.

The düngerproduktion industry is a significant global sector, essential for modern agriculture and food security. However, it also faces environmental challenges related to energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and the potential for nutrient runoff into waterways. Research and development efforts are ongoing to improve the efficiency and sustainability of fertilizer production and application.
