Düngerherstellung, or fertilizer production, is the industrial process of creating substances that are added to soil to supply plant nutrients. The primary goal is to increase crop yields and improve plant growth. The most essential nutrients plants require are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), often referred to as NPK.

Nitrogen fertilizers are commonly produced through the Haber-Bosch process, which synthesizes ammonia from atmospheric nitrogen and hydrogen gas at high temperatures and pressures. Ammonia can then be converted into urea, ammonium nitrate, or other nitrogen-rich compounds. Phosphorus fertilizers are typically derived from phosphate rock, which is treated with sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid to make the phosphorus more accessible to plants. Potassium fertilizers are often sourced from potash deposits, which are then processed to extract potassium chloride or potassium sulfate.

In addition to these primary nutrients, fertilizers can also contain secondary nutrients like calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, as well as micronutrients such as iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron, and molybdenum. These are often added in smaller quantities.

The production process involves various stages, including raw material extraction, chemical reactions, granulation or prilling to create solid fertilizer particles, and packaging. Environmental considerations, such as managing emissions and waste products, are an important aspect of modern fertilizer manufacturing. The choice of fertilizer and its production method can significantly impact agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability.
