It is formed from délután (afternoon) and este (evening) and is used to describe a span of time rather than a particular event. The exact hours it covers can vary regionally, but it is commonly understood as roughly 4:00 to 7:00 PM, when the day’s activities ease and people begin to prepare for dinner or late socializing.

In everyday usage, délutáneste serves as a practical label for scheduling, for example in calendars, event announcements, or hospitality contexts, where one might propose délutáneste találkozó (an afternoon-evening meeting) to accommodate participants with differing work schedules. The term can also appear in media discussions of lifestyle and cultural routines, especially when contrasting with the morning (délelőtt) or full evening (este) periods.

Cultural associations: The concept is loosely tied to the habit of a light refreshment or break in the late afternoon to bridge between work and dinner, sometimes linked with a nap or a rest period in some households, though such associations vary widely.
