Däckljudet, often translated as tire noise, refers to the sound produced by the interaction between a vehicle's tires and the road surface. This phenomenon is a significant contributor to overall traffic noise pollution, especially in urban environments. The primary sources of däckljudet are generally categorized into two main types: surface noise and air pumping noise.

Surface noise arises from the complex mechanical interaction as the tire tread elements come into contact with the irregularities of the road surface. Air pumping noise, also known as forced air expulsion, occurs when air is trapped and then rapidly expelled from the voids between the tire tread and the road surface. This effect is more pronounced with coarser road surfaces and specific tread designs that can create effective air pockets.
