Dysmorphina

Dysmorphina is a genus of small, secretive, ground-dwelling spiders belonging to the family Oonopidae, commonly known as goblin spiders. These spiders are typically found in leaf litter, soil, and other organic debris in temperate and tropical regions worldwide. Their small size, generally less than 5 millimeters, and cryptic coloration make them difficult to spot.

The genus Dysmorphina is characterized by several key morphological features. Spiders in this genus often possess a flattened body, six eyes arranged in a semicircle, and prominent spinnerets. Their chelicerae, or mouthparts, are typically robust. As with other goblin spiders, Dysmorphina spiders are nocturnal hunters, preying on small arthropods like mites and springtails. Their reproductive behavior and life cycle are not extensively studied but are presumed to be similar to other Oonopidae, with females laying egg sacs that they guard.

While Dysmorphina species are widespread, they are not well-known to the general public due to their small size and reclusive habits. Scientific research on this genus is ongoing, focusing on their taxonomy, evolutionary relationships within the Oonopidae family, and their ecological roles in soil ecosystems. Currently, several species have been described, with ongoing discoveries suggesting a greater diversity of Dysmorphina than previously understood.
