Dysfunktionale

Dysfunktionale is a German-language adjective used in psychology, sociology and cultural discourse to describe systems, groups or relationships that do not function effectively. The term is typically used descriptively rather than as a clinical diagnosis, signaling patterns that undermine well-being, performance or development.

Etymology: The word combines the prefix dys- (bad) with Funktion/ Funktional (function). The form dysfunktionale is used to modify a noun, as in dysfunktionale Familie or dysfunktionales Team; the ending agrees with the noun's gender and number.

In psychology and family studies, a dysfunktionale family refers to interrelated patterns such as poor communication, boundary issues, enmeshment, role ambiguity or parentification that hinder healthy development.
