Dualwheel

Dualwheel is a term used to describe a configuration in which two wheels are mounted on the same axle or on the same wheel end. In land transport, dual wheels or dual rear wheels refers to two tires mounted side by side on each end of an axle, commonly seen on heavy-duty pickup trucks, tractors, and semi-trailers. This "dually" arrangement increases the load-carrying capacity and improves stability, traction, and braking performance under heavy loads. The extra wheel pair increases the contact area with the road, distributes weight more widely, and provides redundancy in case of a single tire failure, though it also adds rolling resistance and maintenance needs.

Other uses of the term occur in robotics and industrial equipment, where a wheel module may employ two wheels for improved stability and drive redundancy. In such contexts, dual-wheel configurations can help with obstacle traversal and lateral stability on uneven surfaces.

Typical considerations when employing dual wheels include matching tire sizes and tread patterns across the pair, ensuring proper inflation pressure for all tires, and accounting for the wider track width in turning and alignment. Maintenance involves more tires and rims to inspect for damage and wear.
