Driftillä

Driftillä is a Finnish informal term used to describe the activity of drifting, particularly in car culture. It derives from the English word drift and is formed in Finnish with the adessive suffix -llä, yielding driftillä, roughly meaning "in drifting" or "while drifting." In practice, driftillä is used to refer to both the act and the state of a vehicle that is sliding sideways through a corner.

In everyday language, speakers may say driftailla (to drift) or driftillä ajaminen (driving while drifting). The adessive driftillä is used with verbs or adjectives, for example driftillä oleva auto (a car that is drifting) or driftillä ajava kuski (a driver who is drifting). The term is common among youth, car enthusiasts, and motorsport media, as well as in online content such as videos and social media posts.

Origin and usage: Drifting as a motorsport technique originated in Japan and gained international popularity in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The Finnish usage reflects this global drift culture and has been absorbed into slang and sport reporting.
