Drifthastigheten

Drifthastigheten refers to the average velocity of charged particles in a material when an electric field is applied. These particles, such as electrons in a metal or ions in an electrolyte, are in constant random motion due to thermal energy. However, when an electric field is present, it exerts a force on these charged particles, causing them to drift in a particular direction. This drift is superimposed on their random thermal motion.

The magnitude of the drifthastigheten is determined by several factors, including the strength of the electric field, the charge of the particles, and the resistance they encounter as they move through the material. This resistance is often related to the material's composition and temperature, affecting the frequency of collisions between the charge carriers and the atoms of the material.
