In practice, doppeldeutig can refer to various forms of ambiguity, but some scholars distinguish it from mehrdeutig, which can imply more than two possible readings. In common use, doppeldeutig often highlights a clear twofold interpretation rather than a broader range of ambiguities.

Types and examples: linguistic ambiguity can be lexical, where a word has two related or unrelated meanings, or syntactic, where the sentence structure allows more than one reading. For example, in German the sentence Ich sah den Mann mit dem Fernglas can be read as “I saw the man with the binoculars” (the speaker used binoculars) or “I saw the man who had binoculars” (the man possessed the binoculars).
