It is typically depicted as a slow, ponderous invertebrate with a thick, armored mantle and a mucus-covered exterior that may be bioluminescent. The name combines its slowness with an ominous, doom-laden presence, reflecting its reputation within the imagined ecosystems in which it appears.

In most depictions, doomslugs inhabit volcanic archipelagos, coastal caves, and other harsh maritime environments where their size and protective coating help them endure corrosive terrain and predator pressure. They are often portrayed as solitary dwellers that travel only short distances, relying on their camouflage and secreted slime to evade threats.
