Dolomitmatrix

Dolomitmatrix denotes the fine-grained dolomite-rich interstitial material found in certain carbonate rocks, particularly dolostones and dolomitic limestones. In petrographic descriptions, it is contrasted with coarser dolomite grains or with non-dolomitic clasts. This matrix can constitute a substantial portion of the rock and often contributes to its porosity and mechanical properties.

The matrix is typically microcrystalline to fine-grained dolomite, sometimes containing minor calcite cement, and may host inclusions or a fine intergranular fabric. In some rocks, the matrix is porous and can host cement precipitates or carbonate veils.

Formation and diagenesis: The matrix forms during diagenetic dolomitization, when magnesium-rich fluids permeate a limestone and replace calcium with magnesium, producing dolomite in the pore-filling matrix. This process can occur during burial or early diagenesis in evaporitic or hypersaline environments.

Significance and methods: The presence and character of the Dolomitmatrix influence porosity, permeability, and rock strength, with implications for hydrocarbon reservoirs and groundwater aquifers. Analytical techniques include thin-section petrography, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, cathodoluminescence, and isotopic analysis to distinguish matrix from carbonate grains and to interpret diagenetic history.
