Dolomiterich is a geological term used for rocks, soils, or sediments that contain a high proportion of the mineral dolomite, calcium magnesium carbonate (CaMg(CO3)2). It typically describes dolomite-rich carbonate materials where dolomite dominates over calcite and other carbonates; by contrast, dolostone is a rock composed largely of dolomite.

Formation and distribution: Dolomiterich material often forms by dolomitization, a diagenetic process in which magnesium-rich fluids replace calcium in limestone, or by direct deposition in magnesium-rich marine environments. This can occur in ancient shelf settings and produce extensive dolomite sequences that are preserved in the stratigraphic record. Today, dolomiterich rocks occur in carbonate terrains worldwide, including the Dolomites of northern Italy, an iconic example of dolomite-dominated geology.

Characteristics and implications: Dolomite has the chemical formula CaMg(CO3)2 and typically contains magnesium as a major constituent. It has a Mohs hardness around 3.5–4 and tends to dissolve more slowly than calcite in cold, mildly acidic solutions, influencing karst development. Dolomiterich soils often show higher magnesium and alkaline pH, affecting nutrient availability for plants and requiring specific agricultural practices. The presence of dolomite can improve soil buffering and influence groundwater chemistry in karst regions.

Uses and significance: Dolomite minerals and dolomite-rich rocks are important as sources of magnesium and calcium carbonate for industry, including cement, refractories, and agricultural products.
