Paleoceanography is the scientific discipline focused on reconstructing the history of Earth's oceans and their interactions with climate, life, and biogeochemical cycles. By examining physical, chemical, and biological records preserved in marine environments, paleoceanographers seek to understand past ocean temperatures, salinity, circulation patterns, carbonate chemistry, nutrient status, productivity, and sea level on time scales ranging from thousands to hundreds of millions of years.

Key sources include marine sediment cores, ocean drilling archives, and fossil remains such as foraminifera and diatoms. Proxies from these materials inform past conditions: oxygen isotopes in carbonate shells indicate temperature and ice volume; carbon isotopes reflect carbon-cycle changes. Mg/Ca ratios, TEX86 lipids, and alkenone indices provide temperature estimates, while fossil assemblages and biomarkers reveal productivity and circulation. Dating relies on biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, radiometric methods, and alignment with orbital cycles when possible.

Analytical and modeling approaches combine proxy data with climate models and ocean circulation reconstructions. Large-scale events such as the Cenozoic cooling, the Cretaceous greenhouse world, and rapid events like the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum are studied to understand mechanisms linking oceans and global climate, carbon cycling, and sea level. Paleoceanography also informs predictions of future change by testing hypotheses about feedbacks and thresholds in the climate system.

Limitations include proxy uncertainties, regional versus global signals, diagenetic alteration, and gaps in the geological record. Interdisciplinary collaboration across geology, geochemistry, biology, and modeling is essential to interpret past ocean conditions robustly.
