Dologot

Dologot is a constructed language (conlang) designed for the fictional Dologot Archipelago, appearing in a series of novels and tabletop role-playing materials. The language serves world-building purposes, providing a plausible linguistic backdrop for its inhabitants and their seafaring culture. It has received attention from conlang communities for its structured grammar and coherent vocabulary.

Phonology and writing. Dologot has a relatively small phoneme inventory, with five vowel qualities and a set of consonants typical for sea-based communities. It allows syllable structures of CV and CVC, with stress placed on the penultimate syllable. The language is written primarily with a Latin-based script augmented by diacritics to indicate vowel length and palatalization; a historical script is sometimes shown in artifacts in the stories.

Morphology and syntax. Dologot is mainly agglutinative, using affixes to mark tense, aspect, mood, number, and case. The basic word order is subject–object–verb (SOV). Nouns take case markers to indicate grammatical function, while verbs carry suffixes for tense and aspect. Pronouns are relatively sparse and may be incorporated into verb forms. Determiners and demonstratives precede nouns.

Lexicon and usage. The lexicon centers on maritime life, navigation, weather, and coastal communities, with a preference for compound formations that create precise meanings. Borrowings from neighboring fictional languages appear in trade and technical vocabulary. Learner materials, phrasebooks, and glossaries are circulated among fans and players.
