Dolistne

Dolistne is a genus of bioluminescent, fungi-like organisms described from temperate cave systems. They form small, cushion- or mat-like colonies on limestone surfaces and emit a steady, soft blue-green glow in complete darkness. The organisms are non-photosynthetic and rely on mineral nutrients and organic detritus carried into caves by water or air flow. Dolistne is represented by a small number of described species and is primarily observed in stable, low-light cave environments.

Etymology of the name dolistne traces to a fictional cave-dwelling language, in which dol denotes light and istne refers to stone or rock faces. The name is intended to reflect the genus’s characteristic luminescence and its lithic substrate.

Morphology and biology. Dolistne colonies consist of filamentous hyphae-like structures forming adherent patches. The bioluminescence is produced by luciferin–luciferase-like reactions localized in specialized cells. Reproduction occurs via spore-like propagules released into the cave air, with dispersal dependent on water movement and cave airflow. Growth is slow, and colonies can persist for years in stable microhabitats.

Distribution and habitat. Dolistne is reported from limestone cave systems in a limited geographic region, with occurrences often clustered around drip-water zones and mineral-rich wall substrates. They show tolerance to low temperatures and reduced light but require specific microhabitat conditions, including stable humidity and adequate nutrient input.

Ecology and human interest. In cave ecosystems, dolistne may participate in nutrient cycles by processing detritus and contributing minor organic matter. Local folklore has linked their glow to navigational cues within caves. Conservation concerns center on disturbance from tourism, mining activity, and cave management practices.
