Doekwissels

Doekwissels are the act of changing sails on a sailing vessel. The term combines doek, meaning sail or cloth, and wissel, change. In practice, a doekwissel involves replacing one sail with another to optimize performance, handle changing wind conditions, or adapt to a new point of sail, such as shifting from a close-hauled course to a broad reach. Doekwissels are common on vessels with more than one sail, including sloops, cutters and schooners, as well as on modern yachts with a mainsail and one or more headsails.

The procedure typically begins with a decision and clear communication among the crew about which sail to hoist and when to do it. The vessel is positioned for a safe change, lines are eased, and the sail to be replaced is lowered or furled. The new sail is then hoisted using a halyard and trimmed into place, while sheets are adjusted to the desired angle to the wind. In smaller boats, roller furling gear can reduce the need for full sail changes, allowing a headsail to be swapped without dropping the mainsail. Throughout the process, safety is paramount to prevent lines from snagging or accidental gybes.

Doekwissels are a standard skill in sailing training and racing, where quick and well-coordinated sail changes can affect speed and maneuverability. Historically, sail changes were more labor-intensive and relied on the seamanship of the crew.
