Docking stations are peripheral devices that expand the connectivity of a computer by providing multiple ports through a single connection. Most docks connect to the host computer via USB-C or Thunderbolt, though older hubs may use USB-A. Thunderbolt docks typically offer higher bandwidth and can support multiple high-resolution displays and PCIe devices, while USB-C docks vary in capabilities depending on the host's ports and the dock's implementation. Video output is usually available through DisplayPort and/or HDMI, while data transfer and charging are provided by USB connections and power-delivery features. Ethernet ports enable wired network access, and audio jacks allow headsets or speakers. Some docks include built-in card readers or SD slots.

Docks come in several form factors, including compact travel docks and larger desktop-style stations. Compatibility depends on the host's port standard, power delivery negotiation, and display support. Some USB-C docks rely on DisplayPort Alternate Mode or require DisplayLink technology to drive multiple displays. Thunderbolt docks tend to support multiple 4K displays and can supply higher power to the host or peripheral devices.
