DoDateForare

DoDateForare is a multidisciplinary framework for dating and sequencing events in complex temporal datasets. It combines probabilistic date estimation, provenance tracking, and cross-domain evidence synthesis to produce coherent timelines from heterogeneous sources such as manuscripts, artifact typologies, and archival records.

Originating in the digital humanities and archaeological informatics communities in the 2010s, DoDateForare was proposed to address uncertainties when sources provide partial or conflicting timing information. It emphasizes transparent uncertainty propagation and reproducible workflows. Early implementations tested the integration of radiocarbon results, stylistic dating, and historical chronologies into a single probabilistic timeline.

Core components include temporal triangulation, which combines evidence from independent sources; uncertainty modelling, often using Bayesian methods; provenance-aware data integration; and modular processing pipelines that let researchers swap models or data sources without reworking the entire dataset.

Applications span archaeology, manuscript studies, and digital archives, aiding in resolving date ranges, ordering events, and evaluating competing hypotheses about chronology.

Limitations include data quality requirements and computational demands. Critics caution that probabilistic dating must be paired with contextual interpretation to avoid obscuring qualitative history, and that results are only as reliable as the provenance and coverage of the underlying data.
