Ditheringmethoden

Ditheringmethoden describe a set of techniques used to reduce quantization errors in digital signals. The term "dither" originates from the musical term, referring to the soft, gentle sound made by the jingling of small objects.

In the context of digital signal processing, dither is added to a quantized signal to minimize the error between the original and the quantized signal. The goal is to create a signal that more closely approximates the original waveform. Dither is typically applied after quantization to "seed" the quantization process, making it less predictable and creating a wider range of possible quantization values.

There are two main types of dither: uniform dither and non-uniform dither. Uniform dither, also known as "salt and pepper dither," adds random amounts of noise to the signal, creating a uniform distribution of possible values. Non-uniform dither, on the other hand, produces a more linear distribution of values, often closer to the true signal values.

Typically, dither is generated from a random or pseudorandom source. White noise is most commonly used due to its uniform distribution. However, other distributions, such as thermal or Gaussian noise, can also be used for specific applications.
