The typical workflow includes exploring data with summaries and plots, proposing candidate distributions (for example normal, lognormal, gamma, or exponential for continuous data; Poisson or negative binomial for counts), fitting parameters by maximum likelihood or Bayesian methods, and evaluating fit with goodness-of-fit tests such as Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Anderson-Darling, or Chi-square, supplemented by information criteria like AIC or BIC. Cross-validation and careful consideration of tail behavior help prevent overfitting and ensure the model captures extreme values.

Important considerations include data type (continuous vs discrete), sample size, censoring, measurement error, and the presence of outliers. In some contexts, a mixture model or a heavy-tailed distribution may be preferable. The decision also depends on the intended use: risk assessment may require accurate tail modeling, while prediction might prioritize overall fit.
