Diskurzuskészségek, literally “discourse skills,” refer to the abilities required to produce, interpret, and engage with spoken or written communication in socially and culturally meaningful ways. They encompass a range of linguistic, cognitive, and pragmatic competences, including the organization of ideas, the use of cohesive devices, strategic argumentation, and the recognition of audience expectations.

In academic and professional contexts, discourse skills are essential for crafting coherent arguments, structuring essays, and delivering presentations. They involve the application of genre conventions, such as thesis statements, topic sentences, and concluding summaries, as well as the careful management of coherence through connectors, repetition, and paraphrasing. Furthermore, effective discourse skills enable interlocutors to negotiate meaning, resolve ambiguities, and maintain engagement during conversations or debates.

Discursive competence is traditionally divided into macro- and microstructural elements. Macrostructural skills involve planning, outlining, and monitoring the overall flow of a text or speech, while microstructural skills focus on sentence formation, lexical choice, and grammatical accuracy. Cognitive strategies, such as inference making and perspective-taking, also contribute to the ability to interpret and produce nuanced messages.

Educational programs increasingly emphasize discourse competence training, offering activities that practice text generation, peer review, and contextual adaptation. By developing these skills, individuals can communicate more effectively, adapt to diverse rhetorical situations, and contribute more fully to collaborative knowledge creation.
