Diskretoitu

Diskretoitu is the Estonian term for discretization, the process of converting a continuous model, variable, or signal into a discrete counterpart suitable for computation or analysis. It typically involves sampling in time or space and, in many contexts, quantization of values.

Discretization is used across mathematics and computer science for numerical simulation, solving differential equations, computer graphics, and data processing. It can be categorized into spatial discretization, which replaces a continuous space with a grid or mesh, and temporal discretization, which updates the solution at discrete time steps. Common approaches include finite difference, finite element, and finite volume methods, as well as lattice-based schemes. Time discretization can be explicit or implicit, with stability and accuracy depending on step size and the order of the method.

In statistics and data processing, discretization also refers to turning continuous variables into discrete categories or bins, such as histograms or feature binning. This can simplify models and reduce noise but may lead to information loss or bias.

Key concepts include discretization error, the difference between the discrete model and the original continuous one, and notions of convergence, consistency, and stability, which describe conditions under which the discrete solution approximates the true solution as the discretization becomes finer.
