Disinfektiojäämiä, or disinfection residues, are chemical compounds that remain after a disinfection process. They may include residual disinfectants on surfaces or in liquids, as well as disinfection by-products formed when the disinfectant reacts with organic matter. The nature and amount of residues depend on the disinfectant type, application method, contact time, temperature, and the material being treated.

Disinfectants produce different residues. Chlorine-based agents can leave free chlorine or chloramines; quaternary ammonium compounds may leave surface films; hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid tend to break down more quickly but can leave transient residues. Alcohols evaporate rapidly and typically do not leave persistent residues. In water treatment, disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids can form when disinfectants interact with organic matter, and these are regulated due to health concerns.

Health and safety: Residues can irritate skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract, and certain residues pose toxicity risks if ingested. Food-contact surfaces and medical devices require protocols to minimize residues through proper rinsing and compatibility checking. Regulatory frameworks set limits for residual disinfectants in drinking water and for permissible residues on surfaces, alongside guidelines for safe handling and storage of disinfectants.

Management and mitigation: Control measures include applying appropriate concentrations and contact times, promptly cleaning surfaces prior to disinfection, and using testing methods (test strips, online sensors) to monitor residual levels. Neutralizers such as sodium thiosulfate are used to quench chlorine residues when necessary. After disinfection, rinsing with clean water or allowing volatilization reduces residues before use.

Environmental considerations: Residues released to wastewater can affect aquatic ecosystems; thus, dosing and disposal follow environmental regulations and treatment plant requirements.
