Discburning

Discburning refers to the process of recording data onto optical discs such as CDs, DVDs, or Blu-ray discs using a writable or rewritable disc drive. This process enables users to create custom copies of digital files, including music, videos, software, and data backups. Discburning can be performed with dedicated hardware devices known as disc burners or optical disc drives integrated into computers.

The process typically involves using specialized software—commonly referred to as disc burning software or CD/DVD recording software—that manages data formatting, session management, and writing procedures. When a disc is being burned, the laser inside the drive etches the data onto the disc's surface by altering the reflective properties of the disc's writable layer. The method of burning varies depending on the disc type: CD-R and DVD-R are write-once formats, while CD-RW and DVD-RW are rewritable.

Discburning has historically been a popular method for media distribution, data storage, and creating custom compilations. However, with the rise of high-capacity USB drives, cloud storage, and digital downloads, the use of optical media has declined in recent years. Despite this, disc burning remains relevant in certain contexts, such as archival storage, music production, and environments where physical media is preferred or required.
