The primary tool for implementing this policy is a disavow file, a simple text document that lists the URLs or domains from which the unwanted backlinks originate. By submitting this file to search engines through their webmaster tools, website owners are requesting that the search engine disregard the ranking signals from these specific links. This is a powerful tool, and as such, it should be used with caution.

Incorrectly disavowing legitimate links can lead to a significant drop in search engine rankings. Therefore, it is crucial to perform thorough link audits before creating and submitting a disavow file. The process involves identifying backlinks that are clearly unnatural, such as those from link farms, private blog networks (PBNs), or sites with unrelated content and excessive keyword stuffing.
