Disassembling

Disassembling is the act of taking apart a device, structure, or system to expose its internal components. Documentation and labeling help maintain orientation and connections. Safety considerations include protecting against sharp edges, moving parts, and hazardous materials, as well as handling batteries and pressurized components properly. The process often involves loosening fasteners in reverse order, disconnecting wiring, and separating subassemblies while keeping track of components and their placements.

Disassembling also has relevance in software, where a disassembler translates machine code back into assembly language to analyze behavior, debug, or reverse engineer. In manufacturing and product stewardship, disassembly supports maintenance, refurbishment, or end-of-life recycling, and design for disassembly aims to ease future disassembly and material recovery.

Reassembly is the reverse operation, restoring a disassembled object to its functional state. Not all parts survive a disassembly, and some may require replacement or reconditioning.
