Dipteronia

Dipteronia is a genus of coniferous trees in the pine family Pinaceae. It is native to China, with two species recognized. Dipteronia insignis and Dipteronia sinensis are the only members of this genus. They are small to medium-sized trees, typically growing to heights of 10-30 meters.

The leaves of Dipteronia are unusual among conifers, being compound and pinnately arranged, resembling those of deciduous trees rather than typical needles. The cones are also distinctive, with winged samaras that are dispersed by wind. The bark is smooth and gray when young, becoming fissured with age.

Dipteronia species are found in subtropical and temperate forests, often in mountainous regions. They prefer moist, well-drained soils and a moderate climate. Both species are considered to be of conservation concern due to habitat loss and fragmentation.

Dipteronia sinensis has a wider distribution and is more commonly encountered than Dipteronia insignis. The wood of Dipteronia has been used locally for construction and fuel, but it is not of significant commercial importance. The genus is of interest to botanists for its unique morphological characteristics within the Pinaceae family.
