Dipodomys
Dipodomys is a genus of heteromyid rodents commonly known as kangaroo rats. These North American desert dwellers are characterized by their large hind legs, which allow for powerful saltatorial locomotion, and their long, tufted tails, which aid in balance and communication. Kangaroo rats are primarily nocturnal, emerging from their burrows at dusk to forage for seeds, their main food source. They are well-adapted to arid environments, obtaining most of their water from the metabolic breakdown of seeds and through efficient kidneys that produce highly concentrated urine.
These rodents are solitary and territorial, with individuals maintaining distinct home ranges. They construct extensive burrow
There are numerous species within the Dipodomys genus, exhibiting variations in size, coloration, and geographic distribution
