In most treatments, the Dinean are described as inhabitants of the archipelago of Dinea, a chain of islands in the northern seas of the imaginary continent of Varuna. The term Dinean functions as both an exonym and, in some variants, an endonym for people described in fictional ethnographies.

Dinea’s coastal villages are organized around clan ties and local councils, with decision-making often devolved to elder assemblies. Dinean subsistence typically combines fishing and shellfish gathering with shifting cultivation on small plots near shorelines. The Dinean language in fictional descriptions is usually presented as analytic to moderately synthetic, with a predominantly subject–verb–object (SVO) word order.
