Dimorfizmus

Dimorfizmus refers to the observable difference in form between individuals of the same species. This can manifest in various ways, most commonly between sexes, a phenomenon known as sexual dimorphism. In many species, males and females exhibit distinct physical characteristics beyond their reproductive organs. This can include differences in size, coloration, ornamentation, or the presence of specific structures such as antlers or manes. For instance, peacocks display striking iridescent plumage that far surpasses the more subdued coloration of peahens.

Beyond sexual dimorphism, dimorfizmus can also occur in other contexts. For example, some insect species show polyphenism, where individuals within the same sex can develop different forms based on environmental cues, such as a solitary or gregarious form in locusts, or different castes in social insects like ants and bees. This allows a species to adapt to varying conditions or fulfill different ecological roles. Polymorphism, a related concept, involves the existence of two or more distinct forms within a population, which are not necessarily tied to sex or environmental factors but are rather maintained by genetic variation.
