Dimensioonitus

Dimensioonitus is the process of defining and controlling the sizes and tolerances of features on a product, component, or structure. It is used in engineering, manufacturing, and construction to ensure parts fit together, function as intended, and can be produced cost-effectively. Dimensioonitus combines dimensional measurements with geometric properties, typically expressed through nominal dimensions, tolerances, and geometric tolerances.

Key concepts include nominal dimensions—the intended sizes; tolerances—the permissible deviations from those sizes; and fits—how parts will assemble. Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) provides a standardized system to describe a feature’s form, orientation, and location using symbols and rules, commonly aligned with ISO 1101 and ASME Y14.5.

The typical workflow involves identifying functional requirements, selecting suitable manufacturing processes, defining nominal dimensions, assigning tolerances and GD&T, and producing engineering drawings. Verification involves inspection and metrology to ensure conformance with the specifications.

Proper dimensioning balances functional requirements with manufacturability, reduces the risk of assembly issues, enables interchangeability, and helps control costs by avoiding unnecessary precision.
