Dikotiset

Dikotiset is a term encountered in botanical literature to denote dicotyledonous plants, commonly known in English as dicots. In many non-English sources the form “Dikotiset” is used, sometimes as an exact loanword or translation from dicotyledons. The term refers to plants that typically produce two seed leaves, or cotyledons, during germination, and that generally show net-veined leaves and a vascular arrangement in a ring in mature stems. They also often exhibit floral parts in multiples of four or five, and pollen with multiple pores, though variations occur.

Taxonomic status: Historically, dicotyledons were treated as a single subdivision within angiosperms. Today, modern phylogenetics treats “dicots” as an informal group that includes the major clade of eudicots and several early-diverging lineages. The term remains common in education and some languages, but it is no longer used as a formal taxonomic unit in many classifications.
