Diffraktiojärjestelmä, known in English as a diffraction system, refers to a setup or apparatus designed to observe, measure, or utilize the phenomenon of diffraction. Diffraction occurs when waves, such as light or electrons, encounter an obstacle or aperture and bend around its edges or spread out after passing through it. This bending and spreading cause the wave to interfere with itself, creating characteristic patterns of constructive and destructive interference.

A typical diffraction system might involve a coherent source of waves, such as a laser for light or an electron gun for electrons, and a diffracting element. This element could be a slit, a grating with multiple slits, a crystal, or a surface with a periodic structure. The wave then propagates to a detector, which records the resulting diffraction pattern. This pattern is a series of bright and dark fringes or spots, the spatial arrangement and intensity of which depend on the wavelength of the waves and the dimensions and spacing of the diffracting element.

In optics, diffraction gratings are used in spectrometers to separate light into its constituent wavelengths for analysis. The precise design and control of a diffraction system are crucial for obtaining accurate and meaningful results.
