When a beam of these wave-like particles interacts with a crystal lattice, the waves are scattered in specific directions. The angles and intensities of these scattered waves are determined by the spacing and arrangement of the atoms within the crystal. By measuring these diffraction patterns, scientists can deduce the precise positions of the atoms in the unit cell, which is the smallest repeating unit of the crystal.
