In a diffraction grating, light is dispersed into a spectrum by interference from a well‑defined array of slits or grooves. Gratings are commonly employed in monochromators and spectrographs to analyze light from astronomical objects or laboratory samples.

Although not strictly diffraction gratings, prisms enable separation of colors and are often categorized together with diffraction devices because they share the underlying principle of wavelength‑dependent phase alteration.

Diffraction devices are also foundational in interferometric applications such as the Michelson interferometer or Fourier transform spectrometers. In these devices, wavefronts are split and recombined, producing interference fringes whose spacing encodes spectral or spatial information.

Recent advancements in holographic fabrication techniques have led to high‑efficiency computationally designed gratings. These structures can tailor diffraction efficiency over broad bandwidths, enhancing the performance of spectrometers, telecommunications filters, and quantum information hardware.

Because diffraction phenomena are inherently wave‑based, a thorough understanding of coherence, polarization, and temporal bandwidth is essential when designing and calibrating diffractionlaitteissa. Correct alignment and environmental control, such as temperature stability, are critical to achieving optimal resolution and repeatability in experimental measurements.
