Dielektrikos

Dielektrikos is a term that originates from the Greek words "dia" meaning through and "ēlektron" meaning amber. It refers to a material that does not readily conduct electric current. In essence, dielektrikos are electrical insulators. These materials are characterized by their very low electrical conductivity, meaning that electric charge does not flow through them easily. This property makes them essential components in a wide range of electrical and electronic devices.

The primary function of a dielektrikos material is to prevent the flow of current. This is often achieved by having a large band gap, which means a significant amount of energy is required to free electrons and allow them to move. When an electric field is applied to a dielektrikos, the electric charges within the material are slightly displaced, creating an internal electric field that opposes the applied field. This phenomenon is known as polarization. The ability of a dielektrikos to store electrical energy in this polarized state is quantified by its permittivity.

Common examples of dielektrikos include glass, rubber, plastic, ceramics, and air. These materials are utilized in capacitors, where they separate conductive plates and determine the capacitor's ability to store charge. They are also used as insulation in electrical wires and cables to prevent short circuits and protect users from electric shock. The choice of dielektrikos material depends on factors such as the required dielectric strength (the maximum electric field it can withstand before breaking down), its temperature resistance, and its cost.
