Dicotyledonrelated

Dicotyledon-related is a descriptive term used for traits, taxa, or knowledge associated with dicotyledons, a traditional group of flowering plants defined by having two seed leaves, or cotyledons, in the embryo. The name dicotyledon comes from Greek di- 'two' and kotýlon 'cotyledon'. In modern plant systematics, the label dicotyledon is largely replaced for classification by clades such as eudicots, with some early-diverging lineages formerly included among the dicots grouped as basal dicotids or non-eudicots.

Common features historically associated with dicotyledons include: two cotyledons in the seed; leaves with reticulate (net-like) venation; vascular bundles arranged in a ring within the stem; pollen with typically three apertures (tricolpate) in many lineages; floral organs in parts of four or five; and a tendency toward secondary growth via a vascular cambium in many woody species. Many dicotyledons also have a taproot or primary root system and often rely on seed reserves delivered by the cotyledons rather than a persistent endosperm in mature seeds, although there are exceptions.

Limitations and modern context: Because 'dicotyledon' was a paraphyletic grouping under older classifications, its use as a formal taxon is discouraged in strict phylogenetic terms. The term 'dicotyledon-related' is therefore used mainly as a historical or descriptive label, and in contemporary literature the emphasis is on the clade of eudicots and on the remaining non-eudicot lineages.

Examples and significance: The majority of familiar flowering plants, including beans, sunflowers, roses, oaks, and maples, are eudicots and would be described as dicotyledon-related in a broad sense. The concept helps in discussing shared embryological and morphological features that distinguish these plants from monocots and other angiosperm groups.
