Dhëmbi

Dhëmbi is a term that refers to a tooth in the Albanian language. Teeth are hard structures found in the jaws of many vertebrates, used for biting, tearing, and grinding food. In humans, teeth are essential for digestion, enabling the mechanical breakdown of food into smaller pieces, which aids in swallowing and the initial stages of chemical digestion. The arrangement and type of teeth vary among different species, reflecting their dietary habits.

Human dentition typically consists of four main types: incisors, canines, premolars, and molars. Incisors are located at the front of the mouth and are used for cutting and biting. Canines are pointed teeth, situated next to the incisors, and are primarily used for tearing food. Premolars and molars are located further back in the mouth and have broader surfaces designed for grinding and crushing food. Adults usually have 32 permanent teeth, including wisdom teeth, although some may not develop all of them or have them surgically removed.

The structure of a tooth is complex, comprising several layers. The outermost layer is the enamel, the hardest substance in the human body, which protects the underlying dentin. Dentin is a bone-like tissue that forms the bulk of the tooth. Beneath the dentin lies the pulp, a soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels, responsible for the tooth's vitality. Teeth are anchored in the jawbone by roots, which are covered by cementum, a calcified connective tissue. Dental hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing, are crucial for maintaining the health of teeth and preventing common dental issues like cavities and gum disease.
