Devrinol

Devrinol is the brand name for the herbicide napropamide. It is a soil-applied, preemergence product used primarily in corn and some vegetables to control many annual grasses and several broadleaf weeds. The active ingredient is typically formulated in granular or liquid products for application to the soil surface before weed emergence.

Mode of action and use. Napropamide acts as a soil-acting herbicide that creates a chemical barrier in the upper soil profile. It is taken up by germinating weed roots and shoots, inhibiting root and shoot growth and thereby reducing weed establishment. Activation depends on soil moisture; rainfall or irrigation after application is often required to move the chemical into the root zone. Because it is used before weeds emerge, timing and crop selectivity are important to minimize injury to the crop.

Target weeds and limitations. Devrinol controls many annual grasses such as crabgrass and foxtail, along with some broadleaf species including common lambsquarters and pigweed, though efficacy varies with soil type, moisture, and temperature. It may not provide reliable control of all weed species and is less effective on perennial weeds. Crop injury can occur if applied when crops are not tolerant or if misapplied or insufficiently incorporated. The label provides crop-specific rates, application windows, and rotation guidelines.

Environmental fate and safety. Napropamide is relatively persistent in some soils, with degradation influenced by microbial activity and environmental conditions. It is typically considered of moderate environmental caution, with standard label-based precautions for handling and mixing.
