Devotions

Devotions are acts of religious observance that express reverence, worship, or wholehearted devotion to a deity, sacred principle, or spiritual ideal. The term derives from Latin devotio, meaning dedication or consecration, and in many traditions denotes both private practices and communal rituals aimed at fostering closeness to the sacred.

Devotional practices can be structured around liturgy or scripture, or they may be informal, personal routines. They commonly involve prayer, meditation, reading sacred texts, recitation or singing of hymns, and acts of contemplation, gratitude, confession, or petition. Some traditions organize devotions into daily, weekly, or seasonal cycles and may include the use of devotional books, icons, or sacred objects.

In Christianity, devotions range from private Bible reading and prayer to organized practices such as the Rosary, the Divine Office, or novenas. Catholic devotions emphasize ritual acts and intercessory prayers, while Protestant and Orthodox communities encourage daily scripture meditation and personal prayer, occasionally supplemented by devotional guides.

In Islam, devotions include the five daily prayers (salah), supplication (du’a), and remembrance of God (dhikr). In Hinduism and Sikhism, puja and japa are common; in Buddhism, devotion often centers on meditation, liturgical offerings, and the recitation of sutras or mantras. Across traditions, devotion is seen as training the heart and mind toward reverence.

Modern usage sometimes broadens devotions to personal routines of reflection, mindfulness, or moral commitments that are secular or interfaith in character. Devotional literature and digital media—apps, podcasts, or daily readings—also support individuals seeking regular spiritual or ethical focus.
