Resource development begins with geological, geophysical, and geochemical surveys to estimate resource temperature, flow rates, and sustainability. Exploration drilling confirms reservoirs and assesses risks. Permitting involves environmental impact assessment, land use, and water rights. Drilling targets wells to supply the plant.

Geothermal power technologies include conventional hydrothermal plants using steam or hot water, dry steam, flash-steam cycles, binary-cycle plants, and enhanced geothermal systems that enable resource development in less-ideal reservoirs. Direct-use applications use lower-temperature water for space heating, aquaculture, and industrial processes.
