Detangle

Detangle is the act of removing tangles from a material or substance. Tangling occurs when flexible fibers, filaments, or strands become intertwined, forming knots that hinder use or appearance. Detangling aims to restore a smooth, orderly structure by separating intertwined elements with minimal damage.

In hair care, detangling is a common grooming practice. Wet hair is particularly susceptible to breakage, so detangling is usually done after applying conditioner or a detangling product. Techniques include working from the ends toward the roots with a wide-tooth comb or a specialized detangling brush, using gentle strokes and minimal pulling. For stubborn knots, sectioning the hair and patiently working through the tangle is advised.

In textiles and fiber processing, detangling helps prepare fibers for spinning and knitting. Knotted or matted fibers are separated and aligned; machines such as carding or combing are used to remove knots and to align fibers consistently, improving evenness and strength of the final yarn.
