Detaljnivå

Detaljnivå, or degree of detail, is a concept used to describe how much information is included in a representation, description, or dataset. It refers to the fineness of granularity: a high detaljnivå means many specific elements, precise measurements, and contextual detail, while a low detaljnivå means coarse summaries, broad categories, and less contextual data. The choice of detaljnivå affects clarity, usability, performance, and storage requirements, and is often a design decision balancing completeness against simplicity.

In information systems, detaljnivå is controlled to match the needs of users and the constraints of the system. In API design, clients may request different detaljnivå by selecting fields or by including related entities; in dashboards, data can be shown at daily, weekly, or monthly granularity; in documentation, editors tailor the detaljnivå for technical versus non-technical audiences. In data modeling and databases, granularity relates to the level of aggregation and the partitioning of data. A fact table with fine granularity contains per-transaction data; an aggregate table uses a coarser granularity. In software development, modular design and abstraction layers manage detaljnivå to keep components decoupled and maintainable.

Common challenges include ensuring consistency of detaljnivå across components, avoiding information overload, and providing clear terminology. Effective management often uses explicit policies, metadata describing granularity, and user feedback to adjust the level of detail.
