Detaljergrad

Detaljergrad is a term used to describe the degree or granularity of detail included in a representation, model, or dataset. It indicates how much information is provided and how finely it is specified. In Norwegian usage it is often expressed qualitatively as low, medium, or high, and can also be described on a numeric scale. The concept is closely related to level of detail (LOD) and data granularity.

In information design and documentation, detaljergrad helps determine what the reader should know. A low detaljergrad offers an overview and essential steps, while a high detaljergrad provides full specifications, edge cases, and in-depth procedures. Techniques such as progressive disclosure can be used to adjust detaljergrad dynamically according to user needs.

In software engineering, data modeling, and analytics, detaljergrad controls data granularity. High detaljergrad means fine-grained data with many attributes and precise values; low detaljergrad implies coarser aggregates or summarized data. In geographic information systems and mapping, detaljergrad corresponds to resolution; higher granularity yields more detail, while lower granularity reduces data volume and processing requirements. In computer graphics, the term is analogous to level of detail, where higher detaljergrad increases geometry, textures, and shading complexity.

Decisions about detaljergrad typically consider audience, purpose, task complexity, and performance constraints. The goal is to balance fidelity with usability and efficiency, avoiding information overload while preserving essential accuracy.
