Destinies is the plural form of destiny, a concept referring to futures considered to be determined in advance or to life paths assigned to individuals or groups. The word originates from Latin destinatus, meaning prepared or determined, via Old French destinée and Middle English adoption. In everyday language, destinies can denote either a meaningful life course that one is believed to be meant to follow, or a sequence of events judged to be inevitable.

Philosophically, destinies intersect with debates about determinism and free will. Some belief systems hold that destinies are guided by a divine plan or cosmic order, limiting human freedom; others treat destinies as outcomes arising from complex interactions of character, choice, luck, and environment. In secular discourse, the term often carries a sense of purpose or vocation attached to a person’s life.

Culturally, destinies appear across myths, religions, and literature as a device to explore fate, obligation, or self-determination. In Greek and Norse storytelling, for example, forces such as the Moirai or the Norns are imagined as shaping destinies, while modern fiction frequently presents characters negotiating or redefining their own destinies through action.

Destinies may be described as plural to emphasize multiple potential futures for a person or group, or to discuss distinct life outcomes in different contexts. In contemporary usage, the term is sometimes romanticized as a calling or fate with moral significance, while remaining closely related to the broader notions of fate, providence, and determinism.
