Destatis

Destatis, short for Deutsches Statistisches Bundesamt, is Germany’s central federal statistical office. It is the main producer of official statistics at the national level and provides data to support evidence-based policymaking, public debate, and research. The agency operates within the Federal Statistical Service framework, coordinating with the statistical offices of the Länder (federal states) to ensure consistency and comparability of statistics.

The responsibilities of Destatis cover a wide range of topics, including the economy, population, society, and the environment. It produces key indicators such as national accounts, inflation, employment, and housing statistics, as well as demographic data, education, health, and regional statistics. In addition to publishing reports and statistical yearbooks, Destatis offers access to data through digital databanks and an open data portal for researchers, policymakers, and the general public.

Destatis also plays a role in methodological coordination, standardization of statistical procedures, and quality assurance to maintain the reliability and comparability of statistics over time and across regions. As part of its international engagement, the agency collaborates with Eurostat and other statistical organizations, contributing to European and global statistical initiatives. It also supports census operations and statistical surveys in cooperation with other government bodies.

The office is headquartered in Wiesbaden and operates in alignment with applicable data protection and privacy regulations, as well as the legal framework governing statistical activities in Germany. Through its work, Destatis aims to provide timely, accurate, and accessible statistics that reflect Germany’s economic and social development.
