Desiderius, king of the Lombards (reigned 757–774), was the Lombard ruler in northern Italy during the late 8th century. He succeeded Aistulf and led the kingdom in its conflicts with the expanding Frankish realm under Charlemagne. His defeat by Charlemagne in 774 marked the end of Lombard independence and the incorporation of the kingdom into the Carolingian Empire. His reign is characterized by alliance politics, military campaigns, and efforts to maintain Lombard rule amid growing Frankish influence.

Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466–1536) was a Dutch humanist, theologian, and philologist who became one of the most influential figures of the Northern Renaissance. Erasmus promoted education, classical learning, and reform within the Catholic Church. He produced critical editions of classical texts and a modernized Latin and Greek New Testament (1516). His In Praise of Folly (1509) and his Colloquies advanced calls for intellectual and moral reform, shaping debates on theology, education, and ecclesiastical authority. While his writings exposed church abuses and contributed to reformist thought, he remained committed to church unity and reform within rather than outside the Catholic tradition.
