Depthgeography
Depthgeography is an interdisciplinary field in geography that focuses on the spatial distribution and variation of depth-related attributes across the Earth's surface and subsurface. It encompasses water-depth (bathymetry), soil and rock depth to bedrock, depth to groundwater, and vertical stratification within sediments and man-made layers. The field analyzes how depth interacts with surface features, hydrology, climate, geomorphology, biology, and human activity to shape landscapes and ecosystems.
Researchers use a range of techniques to measure and model depth. Bathymetric surveys with sonar and multi-beam
Applications include coastal and offshore planning, flood risk assessment, sediment transport and erosion studies, groundwater resource
Depthgeography overlaps with bathymetry, geomorphology, hydrogeology, and geoinformatics. Challenges include heterogeneous data sources, varying vertical datums,
