Deozonation

Deozonation refers to the process of removing ozone from a substance or environment. Ozone (O3) is a reactive molecule that can be beneficial in some applications, such as water purification and air sterilization, but it can also be detrimental to certain materials or living organisms. Therefore, methods for deozonation are employed to neutralize or eliminate ozone where it is no longer desired.

Common methods for deozonation include catalytic decomposition, thermal decomposition, and adsorption. Catalytic deozonation often involves passing ozone-laden air or gas over a catalyst, such as activated carbon, manganese dioxide, or noble metals. These catalysts facilitate the breakdown of ozone into oxygen (O2). Thermal deozonation, on the other hand, involves heating the ozone to a temperature where it naturally decomposes into oxygen. Adsorption methods utilize materials that can trap and hold ozone molecules, effectively removing them from the gas stream.

For instance, in ozone therapy, where ozone is intentionally introduced into the body, a deozonation step is often used to remove residual ozone from exhaled air to prevent inhalation. Similarly, in enclosed environments where ozone generators are used for air purification, deozonation mechanisms may be incorporated to maintain safe ozone levels.
